A REGULAR PERSON WHO HAS THIS DISEASE AND STILL DREAMS ABOUT CREATING ART.

STILL DREAMS ABOUT BEING FREE FROM SICKLE CELL, BEING CURED.

STILL DREAMS ABOUT HANGING MY WORK AT A MUSEUM.

ABOUT HERTZ

Hertz Nazaire immigrated from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, when he was eight years old. His childhood in Haiti inspired the colors in his large, vibrant paintings, he said. Hertz began painting in New York City, where he lived with his mother before moving to Bridgeport, Connecticut. He studied at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and University of Bridgeport.

Known for his advocacy work and “Finding Your Colors” adult coloring book series, Hertz created mixed-media visual art reflective of his personal experiences with pain and sickle cell disease. He died of sickle cell-related complications in 2021 at the age of 48.

EVERY TIME YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO SPEAK,

EVERY TIME YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO PAINT,

YOU FEEL THIS HUGE SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY THAT YOU HAVE TO SAY SOMETHING

ABOUT THE INJUSTICE THAT COMES WITH LIVING WITH A DISEASE THAT IS PART OF YOUR DNA.

WHAT CAN YOU SAY…TO CHANGE THE WORLD’S MIND ABOUT SICKLE CELL?

THAT’S MY STORY.
